It's not all Science

You may be surprised to learn that many financial services professionals have no obligation to place their clients' interests and well being ahead of their own.

As fiduciaries, we do. This means that when possible, we avoid conflicts of interest in our advice. More specifically, we earn no compensation via commissions or product sales, so you can be confident that our advice is unbiased and objective.

Simply put, we will always have your best interest in mind.

  • Our relationships always begin with an initial introductory meeting - in-person or via phone/web conference.

    • This first meeting allows us to get to know you and your situation: your goals, resources, and special circumstances. It also gives us an opportunity to explain our services in greater detail and to answer your questions about our process.

    • During this meeting, we will also provide you with documents required by our regulators - essentially deep-dive information and background on our business.

  • If we then mutually agree to work together, the next step would be an exchange of financial information and paperwork to establish our relationship.

    • This will formalize our working relationship and establish investment accounts for our management. We’ll analyze your financial documents to inform our initial investment approach and address questions or concerns you may have about your overall financial situation.

  • A second meeting will follow for us to review our recommended investment portfolio with you.

    • With your approval, we will then proceed with implementing the investment strategy.

  • On an ongoing basis, we will communicate portfolio updates at least quarterly.

    • We price ourselves on our reachability, and make ourselves available for meetings as often as you’d like. In our experience, this generally means more frequent meetings in the earlier years of our relationship, and then tapering off to once or twice per year in the later years as our comfort level with each other grows.

Sound Portfolio Advisors was established in 1999 to provide objective, fee-only investment management and financial advice.  Our offices are located adjacent to the scenic Mystic River Park and drawbridge in the center of town.

 

Who We Serve

Our typical client is enjoying retirement or is within 10 years of it, with savings of at least $500,000. They understand that their long term financial health depends on a professional, measured investing approach and a willingness to re-evaluate their position relative to their objectives.

Theodore L. Parker - President

Ted is President and Managing Partner of Sound Portfolio Advisors. In addition to firm oversight, Ted focuses on portfolio management and retirement adequacy planning on behalf of our clients.

Ted is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional with over thirty years of experience in financial services. Prior to establishing Parker Financial Planning in 1999 (later to become Sound Portfolio Advisors), he was a Vice President at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank in New York City, responsible for client relationships with multinational corporations.

Ted earned a Master's degree in international business and finance from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. He also graduated with honors from Phillips Exeter Academy, New Hampshire.

Ted is active in a number of civic and professional organizations, including the Estate and Tax Planning Council of Eastern Connecticut, and the Rotary Club of Mystic. He is married with two children and a chocolate labrador retriever. In his free time, Ted enjoys sailboat racing, hiking, and mid-century architecture.

Bryan J. Watts - Partner

As Partner at Sound Portfolio Advisors, Bryan focuses on strategic asset allocation and financial planning for our clients.

Bryan is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional with over twelve years of experience in the financial services industry.  Prior to joining Sound Portfolio Advisors, he worked closely with institutional asset managers in analyzing the equity and fixed income research process and evaluating portfolio performance.

Bryan completed an honors Economics degree from Boston College, with a focus on capital markets and statistical analysis. Prior to this, he graduated from the Williams School in New London, Connecticut.

Bryan is married with three children, and spends his free time with his family, playing competitive tennis, and honing his cooking skills.

Patricia C. Small - Director of Operations

As Director of Operations at Sound Portfolio Advisors, Patty is responsible for setting up new client accounts and all account maintenance matters, such as cash and securities transfers, beneficiary designations, and updating client records.

Prior to joining Sound Portfolio Advisors in January 2007, she was a Certified Credit Counselor and HUD housing counselor for over 15 years.   Patty graduated from the University of Connecticut cum laude with a degree in Family Economics and Management.

She is married with two, almost grown children, and spends her free time playing competitive tennis and enjoying the outdoors.
